Olympic Assembly

Yesterday Key Stage 2 had an assembly about the Olympics from a representative from BT. She talked to us about values of the Olympics and the Paralympics and how we can incorporate these into our own lives. We also learned about the history of the Olympic games and why we have five rings and why they are those colours. We met the mascots: Wenlock and Mandeville and learned about what they represent and how they got their names. At the end of the assembly we watched a video about some of the athletes that will be representing our country in the 2012 Olympic games.

Mixed Rounders Tournament

Our mixed rounders team entered a tournament yesterday at Fairfax School. They played 4 other schools and won their last match against St.Nicks 5-1 1/2, coming in fourth place overall. The team were a credit to Whitehouse Common Primary School. Well done to all of those who took part!!
We look forward to the boys and girls rounders tournaments coming up next half term! A special thank you to Miss Maltby, Miss Greenwood and all of the parents for taking them along!!

Pupil Council meet the Governors

Pupil_CouncilLast Thursday evening, three representatives from Pupil Council met with the governors at their full governing body meeting and gave a presentation about the work that we do in school, the important part that we play in making sure the children of Whitehouse Common have a voice and to share the successes of this year and our plans for the future.

The governors were very impressed by the children who attended the meeting and who spoke confidently and clearly.

Well done to those children who took part and a huge thank you to all the members of pupil council who helped to plan the presentation through reflective discussions in our recent meetings.

The remaining pupil council representatives will be leading assemblies across the school towards the end of the year to review our achievements and to share with the school what it has meant to each of them to be a part of pupil council and make a difference to teaching and learning in our school.

Spring Concert Sutton Town Hall

A huge well done to all the children that performed in the Spring Concert, Sunday 20th May, at Sutton Town Hall. Year 2 children wore animal costumes to sing an 'Animal Menagerie Theme with Mrs Mason, Violinists performed with Mrs Clemson and Cellists performed with Mr Smith. Some children from Whitehouse Common were also joined by children from Hollyfield School to perform an 'Old Time Music Hall Medley' with our Area choir and Mrs Mason. Everyone involved perfomed brilliantly and Miss Breeze and Mr Worth thought that all the children behaved really well backstage. Thank you to all the music staff involved and parents for your support.

Backstage! Checking our costumes.

Building Learning Power Competition

As you may remember from our newsletters, we are currently using ‘Building Learning Power’ in school. The aim of this is to develop the learning skills needed to become a life-long learner.  All of the Four Oaks Cluster schools are using this, along with Arthur Terry Secondary School.

Building Learning Power (BLP) is split into four main ‘Learning Skills’ known as the four Rs. These are -

•        Resilience - continuing to try, even when the work is challenging.
•        Resourcefulness – using a variety of appropriate resources around you to help your learning.
•        Reflectiveness - looking back at what you have learnt and thinking about how to improve it.
•        Reciprocity/relationships – working with other people.

We are having a Four Oaks Cluster competition to design four characters to represent each of the four Rs.  They could be a cartoon character, a super human character or even an animal!  Children have been given an entry form today to design their new characters on.

The designs will be judged by our Pupil Council, who will pick a character winner for each of the Four Rs from KS2 and also a winner for each of the Four Rs from KS1/Reception. The winning eight designs will then be put forward with the winning designs from the other schools in the Four Oaks Cluster to be judged by the Four Oaks Youth Council.

A winner for each of the Four Rs will be chosen and this design will be used in all the Four Oaks Cluster schools. It would be great if a winning entry was chosen from Whitehouse Common Primary School so get designing!!

Pupil Council Update

We have been working really hard over this year on a few different projects and would like to share some of our achievements.

We have arranged new football nets for KS2 and are just waiting for them to be put up ready to use!

We have played an important part in the new KS2 play equipment, making sure that the new pieces were exactly what we wanted and were arranged in the most effective way. To achieve this, we shared plans with the school (in assemblies) and asked class council reps to lead meetings to gather preferences from all the children. We used these responses to choose the most popular pieces to buy and then invited a representative from the PTA to our next pupil council meeting to discuss where the equipment would go and how it would be used safely.

We love the new equipment and are really enjoying using it!

We have had shared meetings with the Eco-team this term to begin a pond project, as this is something that has been requested by the children, to both enhance our learning in lots of subjects and to further develop our school grounds.

This will be a big project and we are currently considering fundraising ideas which will help to make it happen.

Watch this space for more news! ......
