Key Stage 2 Teachers get in the Christmas Spirit!!!

The teachers in Key Stage 2 have been really busy this week getting into the Christmas spirit creating the backdrop for the production.  We all stayed late after school to design, draw and paint the scenery to suit our nativity play.  It was a real team effort and the finished product looks great!  What do you think...?

Bike It Tips!

Dear Parents,

First of all I would like to say a big thank you to those of you who participated in the Bike Checks Day at Whitehouse Common last week. We had 112 bikes in that day which is a huge success for our first cycle to school day as a Sustrans Bike It school.  This week we also ran a very successful ‘ditch the stabilisers’ session with almost 20 children learning to ride their bikes which is fantastic.  Some parents have asked me to put together a top tips list for carrying out your own bike checks as well as for those children that may have missed the opportunity to take part in the ‘ditch the stabilisers’ sessions for you to do with your child home.  So here goes…

Bike Checks

· Are your tyres pumped up? They should be nice and hard otherwise you will be prone to punctures.

· Maximum limits. Did you know that on the seat post and the handle bar stem that there is a maximum height you can raise either of these? If you look at either the seat post or stem you will see some lines – this is the maximum safety level you can raise them to. Do not raise them above this limit as this could affect the safety of your child’s bike.

· Brakes – make sure your child’s bike has two working brakes.

· Remove the stabilisers

· Put your child’s seat as low as possible. They must be able to touch the floor flat footed and comfortably

· Get them to look up. Keep their head up. Get them to find something to look at. · Find a slight downhill slope (a gentle slope will do)

· Get them to scoot with their feet and gradually lift their feet off the ground for longer. This will help them to find their balance.

· Once they have practised this for a few times they should then be able to put their feet on the pedals and… away they go!

· Perseverance is the key. They won’t get it straight away and some children only take 2 mins, others take up to 2 hours! But they will get it. It’s simply down to practise.

I hope you have found these top tips useful. If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or ring on 07920 865079. Alternatively come and see me next time I am in school.

Many thanks for your continued support with the Sustrans Bike It project.
