Jubilee Celebrations

For the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, we had a fantastic day consisiting of various "royal-related" activities! In the morning, we had an assembly where all the children performed their own dances. Throughout the afternoon, we held various activities outside on the field, including a 'street-party' style picnic, and building a giant Union Jack out of natural resources found around the school site!

Take a look at the video below to see just some of what we got up to!

Jump Rope for Heart

Last week the children completed the Jump Rope for Heart sponsored skip. The event was a great success and the children all really enjoyed themselves. KS1 children were challenged to skip for 2 minutes and KS2 were challenged to skip for 5 minutes! Look at us in action -

We are now collecting sponsor money so please return your sponsor money to your class teacher or the school office in a named, labelled envelope as soon as you have collected it all in. Many thanks for your support!

Area Sports

On Wednesday 27th June, a selection of children from KS2 took place in the Area Sports Primary Athletics Event at Wyndley Leisure Centre. The day started with an Opening Ceremony in which Whitehouse Common pupils represented Italy with flags, pepperoni pizzas and a leaning tower of Pisa! Then the children each took part in their events while the rest of us cheered them on! Everyone had a great day and the children did really well coming in 6th place overall in the Large Schools category. The children were extremely well behaved and a credit to our school. Well done to all competitors- we were really proud of you!

Tesco Vouchers

A big thank you to everyone that helped us collect Tesco vouchers this year. We collected a massive 12050 vouchers! We have used the vouchers, along with those collected last year, to order:

Tuff Cams -Digital cameras with video created especially for schools

An Olympus Voice recorder

A label maker

Thanks again to everyone that brought in vouchers.

Come Dine With Me

Today six lucky children from Key Stage Two had the chance to do some food tasting at Good Hope Hospital as part of a 'Come Dine With Me' event. The purpose of the visit was to help our local hospital decide what they should put on their new children's menu. The children enjoyed tasting a range of food, with the unaminous favourite being a dessert called 'Chocolate Concrete'! Each type of food was given a mark out of ten depending on how delicious it was. The results showed that the food choices were a success. Some of the children went back for seconds and a few even for thirds! Our school was well represented by the chosen children who behaved brilliantly, well done!

Carrying the Olympic Torch!

On Monday 18th June, Ben Smolden visited our school to talk to the children about carrying the Olympic torch for Sutton Coldfield. We really appreciated listening to Ben explain the reasons he had been chosen for such a special honour and what it meant to him.

olympics 004

In his application sent to the Olympic Committee, from friends at his rugby club, it said: "All at Sutton Coldfield Rugby club are in awe of Ben; a selfless, proactive, passionate doer."

"Ben has dedicated his last 20 years to serve the community in any way he can – selflessly volunteering his time to the club he loves."

We learnt that it is important to recognise people who have helped us in our lives and ensure we help others in return.

Thank you for coming Ben- we will be waiting to see 'The most important 300metres of your life' when you carry that torch through Birmingham on the 30th June.

Jump Rope for Heart

Remember our Jump Rope for Heart sponsored event is next week during National School Sports Week. Please bring in a skipping rope for your P.E. lesson if you have one at home and keep collecting those sponsorships- it's for a great cause!!

Green Flag Success

greenflagOn 29 May 2012 an assessor from Eco -Schools came to the school to look at our Eco activities and credentials. She met with the Eco Team who were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the work of the Eco Team and the eco work carried out across the school. The Assessor was very impressed with the children and the school. It is with huge pride and delight that we can announce that Whitehouse Common Primary School has been awarded the International Eco-Schools Green Flag Award! This award is for continued excellence in improving the environmental performance of the school and wider community. It is a wonderful recognition of all our eco work. Well done everyone. We have been given a special Green Flag which we will be raising during a celebratory occasion to mark this achievement.
