Sunflowers

We have throughly enjoyed the lovely sunshine this week in Reception! As part of our work on 'living things', we have planted sunflower seeds. We found out about what we will have to do to ensure they live and look forward to watching them grow over the coming weeks. We also enjoyed learning about the artist vincent Van Gough and looking at his painting of sunflowers. We enjoyed creating our own sunflower paintings.

Reception Science Week

As part of 'Science week, we enjoyed completing an Ogden Trust challenge card outside in our forest schools area –spider webs! Do you know how a spider makes its web?  We thought about what makes a spider’s web so strong and enjoyed watching video clips of different webs. Spider’s use their webs to catch food. We worked in small groups to make our own webs using hula hoops. We investigated using different materials and tried to ‘catch’ different objects in the web.

What makes the web strong and difficult for insects to escape?

Which materials and shapes caught the most things?

What would happen if a spider was as big as a human?

Pancakes!

Reception have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Shrove Tuesday today. Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day. It is celebrated on  the Tuesday before Lent begins. Lent is a time when Christians are getting ready for Easter. In the past, people gave up food like eggs, milk and sugar at Lent. The day before Lent began, they would use up all these foods by making pancakes. That is why people eat pancakes on Pancake Day!
