Whitehouse Common is an Eco School. We follow the Eco Schools’ programme to give our pupils a wider understanding of the world and the environment we all share. Eco Schools is an international organisation operating in over 50 countries, encouraging and educating children to be environmentally aware. In the UK, Eco Schools is overseen by the Keep Britain Tidy organisation.

There are nine topics that form the structure of the programme: Energy; Litter; Water; Waste; Healthy Living; School Grounds; Transport; Biodiversity; Global Perspective.

We have been following the Eco Schools programme since 2009, gaining our Bronze and Silver award, culminating in being awarded Green Flag Status in 2012. In July 2014 we successfully renewed our Green Flag Award. The school continues to develop its Eco work, spearheaded by the Eco Team. We hope you find our page interesting.

Agenda for 6 May 2014

Our Yr 3 children are now starting to make compost as their Yr group Eco responsibility. They collect the fresh peelings from the kitchen and put them in the tumbler compost maker.

We are also continuing to harvest the rhubarb which will be cooked for the parents lunch on Thursday 1 May.

At the end of last term the Eco Team walked to Hollyfield Primary School to give them our stamps to add to their collection. We saved a Kilo of stamps! Hollyfield were very pleased to receive them. They made us very welcome and showed us their new growing area which looks state of the art raised plot.

A fabulous result! 2nd in the region and 272 nationally.

The school has done exceptionally well in the Big Pedal this year. Our overall position nationally was 272 and we came a brilliant second in the West Midlands.

Congratulations goes to Penns Primary who, once again were the regional winners!

Our Bike It Breakfast was a great success and the Bike It Bake Off saw some great pedal cakes. Here is a picture of our cake winners.

Agenda 11 March 2014

What an exciting time we had reading the meters last meeting! We didnt get very far. When we looked into the water meter hole at the bottom of the Acorns drive, there inside we found a newt!

newt

We decided to relocate Sammy the newt because we know that creatures who fall into the water meter hole get stuck there. So Sammy now has a waterside home next to the pond!

As you may imagine, meter reading went out the window at this point!

We will return to the meters next month.

In the mean time our next meeting will be looking at the Big Pedal, and some practical work. We shall be sowing seeds for the spring and summer. Some seeds may be coming home with our eco members.
