This week in Literacy we had fun during ‘Talk for Writing’ retelling the story of The Enormous Turnip. We used actions for lots of words and are now applying these in our writing.

In Maths we have enjoyed helping Percy Parker understand how to use resources to double numbers. We impressed Percy and explained the process very clearly.

We were lucky this morning as we had a visitor in to talk about her job as an Air Stewardess we asked lots of questions and found out lots of interesting information.bobby2bobby3bobby

We hope you all enjoyed the class assemblies as much as we enjoyed putting them together. We are very proud of our children and thought they performed brilliantly today!

We think that on parents evening you may want to take a look at our pink writing books as we have written some super versions of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Just a reminder that there will be a phonics workshop next week on Thursday 9-00am to provide you with information about the phonics screening test and changes in the new curriculum. We hope to see you there.

This week in literacy we have been looking at connectives. We have thought of 2 simple sentences which we could join together with an appropriate connective.

We have also looked at pronouns. Can you remember what the pronouns are in these sentences?

Sarah had some cake and she shared it with her dog.

The boys were outside playing but they started to get tired so they went home.

In Maths we have been looking at division problems and have been using resources to share objects out equally.

We are looking forward to sharing our class assemblies next week!

RAF Cosford

What a great week!

On Monday we enjoyed a fantastic school trip to RAF Cosford. We enjoyed looking around all of the planes, pretending we were at the airport to go away somewhere nice on holiday and going into the 4D experience.

On Wednesday/Thursday we had our first swimming lesson of the term. The teachers were all very proud of the children and how well behaved and confident they were.

During the week during our literacy sessions, we planned and wrote a recount about our school trip. We worked hard to use full stops, capital letters, spell key words correctly and write in paragraphs.

In our topic lessons we learnt all about hot ait balloons and have begun to make a Papier-Mâché balloon.

In maths we have been subtracting numbers using a hundred square.

Another busy but great week!

Is this a sentence?

This week we have being learning all about sentences. Did you know that every sentence needs to have a verb in it? We have been identifying verbs in sentences and have been up levelling sentences by adding in adverbs and adjectives to add additional detail.

In Guided Reading we have also been looking at diary extracts and today we have been writing our own diary entries for days in the Christmas holidays.

We are looking forward to our school trip on Monday to Cosford Air Museum.

Wow what an exciting week we have had so far on our last week at school before the Christmas Holidays. I am sure you will agree that the children were fantastic in their Christmas shows on Monday and Tuesday and performed brilliantly. We are looking forward to seeing Father Christmas and having our Christmas parties later this week too.

The children have all worked very hard this term and we are very proud of them all. We hope you have a lovely Christmas and enjoy this special time together.

Thanks for all your support.

We have begun designing and making our own pop-up puppets which will show what each child wants to be when they grow up! Some very interesting choices from your children, a few Ballerinas, Paleontologists and lots of teachers! Watch this space, we hope to show you a few soon!

How to turn a teacher into a toad

This week in maths we have been investigating whether a number is odd or even. We worked with a partner to see whether we could share objects in to equal groups.

blog odd and even

In Literacy we have been writing instructions for ‘How To Turn A Teacher In To A Toad”. Some of the ingredients that the children have chosen have not been very pleasant! The teachers are all hoping that the instructions won’t work and that the children won’t test them out!

We have also enjoyed learning about greater than and less than symbols using Snappy the crocodile to help us.

In Literacy we have been looking at camera angles and discussing whether it is a long shot, mid shot or a close up shot. We used actions to help us work out an angle and then sorted some images from films into piles. camera 1camera

Toys Topic

User Rating:  / 1

This week we have found out that our topic for this term is toys. We are very excited about this topic and have enjoyed our activities so far.

We have enjoyed looking at old and new toys this week. We have found out that most old toys were made out of wood and tin. We compared them to our toys today which are mostly made out of plastic. We preferred our teddy bears from older teddy bears as they feel a lot softer and have lots of stuffing. In the past teddy bears were made to look more like the real animal and were not as cuddly.

Did you know that some dolls were made of wax and china?

In Maths we have been working hard to understand place value. We know that 13 has 1 lot of ten and 3 units. We have been using objects to help us work out different lots of tens and ones in a number.

We have enjoyed singing our 2’s. 5’s and 10 times tables with Percy Parker and have been trying really hard to write number sentences to match a problem.

We have also enjoyed singing our days of the week song in Spanish.

Helping Barnaby Bear

User Rating:  / 1

This week in Year 1 we have helped Barnaby Bear write a non-chronological report to his family about Whitehouse Common Primary School. We have written lots of information about our school under a range of sub headings. In maths we have been shopping and adding together the total cost in our basket. We had to remember to write our number sentences and include the ‘p’ sign after each number to show that we were adding money. In science we enjoyed looking at nocturnal animals and learning about why they may sleep in the day and come out at night.
