This week we have enjoyed learning all about Mo Farah for Black History Week. We were very brave and stood up in assembly to talk about what we had found out. We were very surprised to learn that he struggled to fit in at school because he didn’t speak much English and that he also supports Arsenal Football Club. (Which did not impress a few of our boys?)

We have impressed our teachers this week with our improved maths and phonic knowledge, which reflects our hard work this term.

We are now looking forward to a nice break over half term to rest our brains!

Our Beautiful World!

User Rating:  / 0

To complete our RE topic this half term we have been thinking about our surroundings. During the half term we have thought about all the beautiful thinkgs in our world and how they were created. Today the children have been on a walk around the school grounds. They identified areas of the school which could be made more 'beautiful' and discussed how keeping areas around the school tidy was very important and everyone's responsibility.

In Literacy, we have been looking at the story of Handa’s Surprise. We looked at how the culture and setting was different to England and described the setting using a range of adjectives.

In Maths, we have been using Numicon to help us find a range of ways of making different amounts using the coins 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p. We also found Numicon helpful to help us work out the correct change from 20p for the customers at the shop.

We enjoyed our first visit to the Art room this week to create some African Masks. We think they look great do you?

FOLTE DAY

User Rating:  / 0

In Literacy this week, we have been writing some Non-Chronological reports all about Whitehouse Common. We have been using, sub-headings, a title, an introduction and some paragraphs, which included lots of information and facts about our school.

In Maths, we have been solving some number problems and working out which operation we needed to use.

On Friday, we were lucky to have Hollyfield School children come and visit us for our FOLTE Day. We made lots of new friends and learnt about our value self-help. We came up with lots of ideas about how we could help ourselves before we need to ask an adult or friend for help.

Ornage Cupcake making - Yummy!!!

Barnaby Bear has been teaching us all about Spain this week. We have learnt about the different climate, culture and foods on offer. We discussed how the warm weather allows citrus fruits to grow and decided to use Spanish oranges from Saville to make our very own orange cupcakes. The children all took turns to add ingredients, stir, spoon out and even wash up! The best bit was eating them afterwards! They were Yummy!!

Year 1 News

We have had another busy, exciting week in Year 1

In Maths we have been working hard to find half of a number by sharing out objects between 2 people. We then used chalk in our outdoor area to have a go at writing the symbol for ½ to show our answer. We really enjoyed this lesson and worked well in pairs.

In Literacy we have been using an Atlas to help us find out some information about different parts of the world by using some of the features of Non-fiction books. We know that an Index is in alphabetical order and this helped us to find the countries that we were looking for more easily.

We are looking forward to our FOLTE day next week.

Well Done Dancers!!!

User Rating:  / 0

Saturday morning was damp, cold and drizzily but all were warmed by the sight of our amazing children bopping and spinning with all of their might. Eight children from Year 1 and representatives from Year 3 performed three dances at the Arthur Terry Community Fayre. The children opened the morning with their dances and by the time they had finished they'd even made the sun come out. Well done to all our dancers, you did us proud!!

Barnaby has Arrived!!!

After receiving a postcard from Barnaby this week saying he had arrived at school we were a bit surprised not to find him in the classroom! Unfortunately, Barnaby had got lost on the school grounds so it was up to the children to hunt him down. Thankfully it didn't take long to find him and Barnaby is now in class sharing lots of his travelling experiences with the children.

The children have also been working hard this week learning all about the senses and are looking forward to some hands, eyes, ears and taste bud, on investigations next week!

Welcome to Year 1!

September has arrived and we are really excited to welcome our 3 new classes to Year 1. The children have all settled really well into their new classes and are picking routines really quickly. It's great to see the children looking so smart in their new uniform and to see them making a real effort to remember to keep their shirts tucked in, hair tied back and shoes on the right feet!

Next week we will begin our half termly topic 'Around the World with Barnaby Bear', we have already received several postcodes from Barnaby during the Summer so are really looking forward to sharing these with the children in the coming weeks.

Wow!! What a lot of fantastic artists we have at our school! Well done to all the children that completed an entry form for the chance to design this year's Christmas stamp. I have had the tough job of sorting through all our entries and have chosen 30 which have been sent off to the competition.

Your entries will now be judged in the regional competition (there will be 24 regional winners) with a possible £500 prize! Regional runners-up could receive £100! Fingers crossed!

Well done to all the children from 1EE that represented our Year group dancing at the Summer Fayre (and a really big well done to Mrs Edmunds for stepping in at the last minute!!). Well done to you all for your fabulous participation during Sports Day, you were a real credit to our school. We were really proud of your efforts and the excellent sportsmanship you all showed.

All very excited about our trip to the beach today. As the weather is improving (finally!) please can you try to ensure you suncream all year 1 children before the start of the day and send them with some cream they can apply THEMSELVES before lunch. Staff are not able to apply cream but will remind children to do this. Children should also have hats, named, in school.

Here's to a great day at the seaside!
