Shakespeare Week!

User Rating:  / 1

As part of our Shakespeare celebrations, we read and discussed some extracts from Macbeth then had a go at recreating a selection of scenes ourselves! It was great fun and Miss Ainley and Miss Greenwood were extremely impressed that all of the children made a huge effort to use the actual language from the original play! Miss Maugham had heard all about it and even came to watch us too!2016 04 14 17.28.14 1

DT Fairground rides!

models

As part of our DT work this term, Year 5 have designed and made their own fairground rides using pulleys and gears.

Miss Ainley and Miss Greenwood have been very impressed with the children's grasping of key vocabulary and being able to talk about their models using the terminology, such as driver belt, pulley, gear, driver, follower, input, output and many more!

The classes really had to work collaboratively to make the models following a systematic approach, and use their perseverance skills when things didn't quite go to plan!

Poetry Project!

User Rating:  / 0

Before Half Term, we had a very exciting poetry project in school. Year 5's poem was 'The Star' by Jane Taylor - which is the original poem that 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' was taken from. We did lots of fun activities exploring poetry and the poem, before devising our own performances of the different stanzas. Pur performances were filmed and sent to other Year 5 classes in the LTE for them to watch - and we got to watch theirs!

It was a great couple of weeks and we now feel very inspired about Poetry! Head over to www.lte-literacy.co.uk to see our videos!

Learning with a twist!

User Rating:  / 2

Over the last couple of weeks in Year 5, we have been having lots of fun learning in different and new ways.

We have secured our knowledge of fractions and decimals using Tarsia puzzles (and even creating some of our own pieces!) which the children have really enjoyed completing in teams.

We have also been visiting the Phiz Lab as part of our Science lessons on Electricity. In the Phiz Lab, we have investigated building circuits with different components and seeing how different changes effect our circuits. We also get to wear lab coats and goggles (safety first!) - check out our groovy photo below!

Mad Science Assembly Today

User Rating:  / 0

Today we were lucky enough to have a Mad Science assembly. We saw some fantastic experiments and even took part in some too! It made us curious about science and helped us to question why certain things happen.

There will be a Mad Science Club on Tuesdays 3.30-4.30 for year 4 children starting one February 9th for 6 weeks. The year four children will have been given a letter about this today. For anymore information please ask at the office.

Year 5's Mayan Mayhem

User Rating:  / 1

Since we came back last week, we have been getting stuck into our new topic - Mayan Mayhem! We started with an archaeological dig for artefacts, and had to try and work out what they were, then we mapped out a blue print of Chichen Itza in Mexico! We even had to use our Maths skills to scale down the measurements. It was a great day! We have also learnt all about the different Gods and beliefs of the Ancient Mayans.mayan

Christmas Concert at Lichfield Cathedral

User Rating:  / 1

Last week Year 5 attended Lichfield Cathedral to perform a variety of Christmas songs.  It was a great success and the Cathedral was packed full of people who had come to watch.  A reading was confidently read by one of the children and they all sang beautifully.  Several other schools from the local area also attended as did a brass band.  We certainly felt in the Christmas spirit as we left Wednesday evening.  A huge well done to all of the children who participated

We have been creating some present lists and calculating the costs! we have also considered real life money problems and thought about different methods to calculate total costs. We have used toy websites to research costings and ensure we get the best deals!

Visual literacy and Narrative texts

User Rating:  / 0

This week we have studied a short animation about a baboon on the moon and linked this to the John Lewis Christmas advert. We have thought about how the characters feel and how the visual texts evoke different responses in the viewer; how the author encourages us to feel empathy for the characters and their stories. In our narrative texts we have used a wide vocabulary and we are securing our punctuation skills to guide the reader, create tension and pace!

Hockey tournament

User Rating:  / 1

On the 23rd of October year 5 took part in a hockey tournament! We worked in small teams and worked hard to secure points for our house teams. Thecompetition was tough, but our teachers and coaches were quick to recognise how our skills and techniques had improved! We thoroughly enjoyed this experience; it was great to perfect our skills and apply these to match related play! Congratulations to Elder and all teams that took part!
