Year 6 had a fabulous time celebrating World Book Day. We had a fantastic assortment of Roald Dahl dress up characters and the children read beautifully with their Year 2 friends. Arthur Terry very kindly performed their upcoming production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ for us this week, we loved the songs and super acting. It’s made us all look forward to our end of year production!
We have an excursion booked for Wednesday 16th March to the National Memorial Arboretum, please ensure your slip has been returned and make sure you bring a warm coat! Also, please note the WOW project homework deadline is now Tuesday May 3rd as our topic will be carrying over into the start of the Summer term.

This week Miss Maugham and Miss Johnston's maths groups have been looking at properties of circles. The children can name parts of a circle and use this information to solve problems.
In this lesson, the children explored how to create patterns by drawing circles and arcs with a compass.

We are happy to be starting our ‘Home Front’ topic centred around World War II. The children have furnished us with some amazing facts already and we look forward to seeing their homework creations at the end of term. Classes will be creating their own World War themed dances over the coming weeks too!
Keep working hard on your CGP tasks and remember to bring in the books for marking on a Friday. Keep an eye out for a letter coming home about our upcoming trip the National Memorial Arboretum.
Miss Maugham will be running a ‘SATs Surgery’ over the next few weeks. This is a valuable drop in opportunity to come and ask about any queries or problems you may have with some of the key concepts covered in Maths or SPaG. This will be from 8.30am on the specified days. She will be located in her office in the Oaks building.

The children have made a fabulous start to 2016. We have been exploring our exciting new topic ‘Tomb Raiders’ ask your child what they’ve learned so far about the mysterious mummies of Egypt! Our Science unit this half term is ‘Forces in Action’, what forces can you notice around your house?
Many thanks for supporting the recent changes to homework. We are extremely impressed with the Wow Project work we’ve seen so far. Keep working hard to build up those House Points ready for the deadline. In addition, the comprehension given out this week is due in for Monday.

Year 6 received their First Aid training this week from the St John’s Ambulance. The children learnt many useful procedures for a whole range of First Aid situations. What a vital set of skills to acquire before heading off to Secondary School and the wider world.
Ask your child about what they learnt. Can they remember want DRABC stood for? The children participated brilliantly and demonstrated their understanding really well. As a result, all the children across the Year 6 have passed the course and will be receiving their First Aid certificates soon. Well done!

As well as preparing busily for our Carol Concert, Year 6 has been writing informal and formal letters as part of our Room 13 Literacy work. We have nearly finished the book and eagerly await the finale! We have been very impressed with the calibre of work produced as part of this unit. Well done Year 6.
During Science we have been exploring inheritance and the Theory of Evolution. The children have been exploring how different species have adapted to their environment for survival. How has the Polar Bear adapted to survive in the Arctic?
Next week sees us fundraising for the St John’s Ambulance Service in return for some super First Aid training we will be receiving the week after. Please feel free to send in some shop bought, nut free cakes from Wednesday for our Cake Sale on Thursday and Friday break time.

We’ve enjoying exploring our new topic this week. Vikings originated from Scandinavia and travelled across the North Sea as well as the Atlantic. The children enjoyed making model long ships and learning about how they settled in the North East of England. In ICT, we have been learning about e-safety. Can you remember how we keep safe when using the Internet?
We were very impressed with the figurative language used this week to enhance our descriptive writing this week. Spooky Room 13 has something living in there…….. but who is it? What is it?

We have begun an exciting new unit in Literacy centred around the text ‘Room 13’ by Robert Swindells. The children have been researching different aspects of the book and making some predictions based on inferred and deduced information. We can’t wait to read it!
New maths groups have started really well this week. The children have been exploring place value and securing their calculation knowledge. Both classes have also been busy preparing for their Class Assemblies which will take place next Friday 9th October; 6LC in the morning and 6HJ in the afternoon. We really hope you can come to see their special memories of Howtown.
We are very proud of how the children represented themselves and our school while we were away. We hope their washing wasn't too awful at the weekend!

We’ve been looking at biographical and autobiographical writing this week culminating in some fabulous writing on Friday. It’s been very interesting to read the autobiographies of our Year 6 children; we’ve found out some interesting facts about them.
During maths work, we have been collecting, presenting and interpreting a data in a range of ways. We used tubes of Smarties and investigated different ways we could show the colour data. We had some excellent graphs, tally charts as well as representations of ratio and proportion as fraction and decimals. Well done Year 6!
The staff are very excited for Howtown next week, not long now! Have a restful weekend ready for an action packed week.
