Year 6 Blog

Welcome to the Year 6 blog. Find out what our classes have been up to lately!

A week of workshops!

User Rating:  / 1

Year 6 were lucky enough to enjoy an excellent workshop this week which was delivered by a history teacher from King Edward's School in Birmingham.  The theme of our workshop was the Egyptians and we took part in a variety of activities which were designed to explore how the Egyptians built their impressive pyramids.  Some of the things we learnt were how they tested whether the land was level (by using water) and how they moved the heavy rocks into place (by using ramps and pulleys).  It was a really fun-packed hour and we learnt so much through the hands-on activities.

We also really enjoyed our inspire workshop which we held for parents yesterday.  The theme was writing and we hope that you all picked up some tips and ideas to use at home.  A huge thank you to all of the parents who attended and participated so well with all of the activities.  If you were unable to attend, we hope that you found the pack which we sent home with your child helpful.

Welcome back!

We hope that all children and their families enjoyed a relaxing and fun packed break!  We have really enjoyed hearing about all of the things you got up to in the holiday today.  2015 is going to be a busy year for year 6 with SATs tests to sit in May and transition to secondary school in September.  We have got lots of lovely things coming up at school over the next few weeks and months, starting with history workshops tomorrow to introduce our brand new topic - Tomb Raiders (also known as the ancient Egytians).  I wonder what we will discover ...

A big thank you to all of the children and parents who attended our carol concert last night at St Chad's.  It was wonderful to hear the children perform so confidently and to enjoy the build up to Christmas together.  The Year 6 team would like to wish all children and their families a happy and restful break and we look forward to welcoming you back in the new year.

Test week!

User Rating:  / 1

All of the year 6 staff are so proud of the children this week because they have been working so hard with only one week left before Christmas!  We have been so impressed with their focus and are really pleased that all of the hard work they have been putting in this term is being reflected through their test scores.  Well done and keep up the hard work!

The Snowman's Journey

User Rating:  / 1

As we continue to build up to Christmas, there is a definite chill in the air (could snow be on the way?) and our Literacy lessons are becoming more Christmassy.  We have been watching the animation of 'The Snowman's Journey' and writing a recount all about his adventures with flocks of sheep, raging rivers and busy roads.  The standard of writing produced has really impressed us - especially the use of fantastic figurative langauge such as similes and metaphors.  We will be continuing our Christmas theme by writing some instructions next ... What could they be for?

Digging for dinosaurs!

User Rating:  / 2

We started a new Science topic this week with an exciting activity which grabbed our attention.

In groups we were given some dinosaur bones and the equipment which we needed to use to fossilise them!  By doing this we began to learn about how fossils are formed and how scientists are able to use these fossils to find out more about life in the past.  We will be digging up our dinosaur bones in the coming weeks ... watch this space!

Do vampires exist?

User Rating:  / 0

Year 6 have really enjoyed reading 'Room 13' and have produced lots of excellent writing linked to it.  Examples include breath-taking descriptions and a non-chronological report all about the Vampire bat (a new species!)

This week we have moved onto a new style of writing (discussion texts) and today we held a debate to try and establish once and for all whether vampires exist.  Many valid points were given on each side including:

FOR - Photographic evidence has been discovered - how can you explain what is the photo if it is not a vampire?

AGAINST - Writers and film makers have imagined vampires to scare people and make their stories more exciting.

As there were many valid points on each side, it was difficult to come to a final conclusion.  This is not a problem however, as we will now move on to our writing and a discussion text should be balanced!

Thank you for coming to watch us in our class assemblies last week, we hope that you enjoyed them. Also thank you for attending the Curriculum Workshop last Tuesday.

This half term we have been lucky enough to have a specialist P.E teacher leading our P.E lesson every Friday. Mr. Davis from Bishop Vesey's Grammar School has been teaching us rugby skills and has said that he is very impressed with what we have learnt! We have been working on passing the ball backwards only, learning how to catch and throw the ball and also learning the rules of tag rugby.

We will be competiting in a year group competition in a couple of weeks!

Assembly preparation ...

User Rating:  / 3

This week everyone in Year 6 has been hard at work preparing for our class assemblies.  We have been working together to write our scripts and then learn our parts.  We are hoping that you will be able to see the result of our hard work on Friday when we perform our assemblies in front of parents and the rest of the school ... see you then!
