Cricket with Bishop Vesey

This half term, Year 5 have been enjoying having our PE taught by the specialst teachers from Bishop Vesey Grammar School. Today we were lucky enough to use the batting nets down on the Vesey field, and are working up to a Year 5 tournament!

The Wilson Stuart Year 5/6 Cricket Tournament is coming up on the 12th June - we will be selecting a team over the next week, who will also have the opportunity to attend an after school club run by BVGS, so let us know if you are interested!

Cross country at Bishop Veseys - April 26th

Whole teamLast night the Whitehouse Common Cross Country team once more set off through the Vesey Gate to face the final run of the season. With the promise of a new course, excitement and spirits were high, and this was aided by the weather. In contrast to last year's freezing deluge which led to quips about Noah and some convincing imitations of drowned rats, the sun shone down on us as we headed for our favourite tree to make camp and prepare. All the parents (thank you for your support!) and Señora Stevens were particularly pleased!

A quick chat with Mr Williams led to early knowledge of the route; back towards school, along the fence and then back down to Veseys, along parallel to the railway, around the cricket scoreboard and back to where they started. Much relief that it was shorter, but a little trepidation as it was immediately straight uphill. Advice about pacing, keeping your position, not panicking and relaxing shared, the boys lined up and set off without a hitch, all finishing in the top two thirds with Jalen and Ben doing particularly well finishing 7th and 8th respectively.

The boys finishing with the girls still on the starting line meant that Señora Stevens had to leave them with a final word of advice and a smile as Isabell was clearly in no mood for messing and was already applying Mr Melville's top tip, and go to cheer the boys over the line. The girls set off at a gallop and unfortunately several of our girls were knocked over in the race for positions. However, you can't keep our resilient runners down, and they all got up and carried on. Every one of them finished strongly, cheered on by the boys, with Isabell leading them home in 12th.

After the race was over, trophies and medals for the year were presented (based on the previous 3 races.) Every year Y6 miss the first race as they are at Howtown, and once more this hampered us somewhat. However, our boys finished 9th out of the 17 or 18 schools competing, and the girls 5th. Overall, our team came 6th. (If the final race had counted towards this we suspect we'd have picked up a place or two.)

Señora Stevens was incredibly proud of the whole team yesterday, not just for their running but also for their spirit and determination, and the way they looked out for each other, encouraging one another when they were flagging and cheering each other over the line. Well done to them and everyone who has represented the school this year at cross country. You've all   improved as the year has gone on and been a pleasure to 'coach.' Year 6 - good luck at your new schools, and Year 5 - keep running and improving, and let's see what we can do next year!

A Win for Whitehouse Common!

This week the A and B Football Team has played against Boldmere and Walmley Junior School.

We lost our first match against Boldmere, and felt pretty defeated...

However, we picked ourselves back up, learnt from our mistakes and put on our game faces!

We then won our next game against Walmley, it was a great game of football with a huge amount of sportsmanship from both sides. Well done boys.

A Team

The next game will be away, agaisnt Town Junior (A Team only). It is on the 17th of April.

See you next time!

5MM Gymnastics House Tournament

After a few weeks of building up our skills and having lots of fun, 5MM compelted their End of Unit Tournament in Gymnastics this week.

Each House Team was split into two groups and scored out of 5 on different aspects of the sequence routine they had put together (including: timing, core body strength, creativity, accuracy of balances, range of difficulty of balances),

The sequences were very impressive and showed how much the children had learnt, and how much their skills had developed from the first few lessons.

Well done to ACER who came out as the overall winners!
