Lo que aprendimos esta semana (Primavera 4)

Let's start this week with some news from Reception. These two smiling 'chicas' were sent to show their work to Señora Stevens on Tuesday. She was very pleased to see them and 2HD gave them a round of applause for such beautiful colouring of 'el arco iris'. ¡Bien hecho!

2HD clapped out the names of animals in Spanish this week whilst 2MW made an animal symphony by clapping the rhythm of the Spanish animal names whilst saying them. They did hope that the other classes weren't disturbed by their enthusiasm! And staying in FKS and KS1, Señora Stevens was in charge of assembly on Tuesday and recruited some helpers to tell the story of El Nabo Enorme. Unfortunately there are no photographs but Daisy did an excellent job as 'el nabo enorme' who finally popped out of the ground, but only when pulled by el abuelo, la abuela, Marisol, el perro, el gato, el ratón y la araña!

In KS2, Year 3 opened their class assemblies with a Spanish song about friends, and a piece of Y3 Spanish work made it onto the Excellence Board. Can you find it here? Year 4 continued to work on the date, this week talking about the date of their birthday as well as various Saint's Days.

5SG and 5MA continued to grapple with the time. They completed a Tarsia through which they discovered that to say minutes past the hour you use 'y' meaning and, and to say minutes to the hour you sue 'menos' which means minus. The two teams who completed their Tarsia first are pictured here.

And year 6, despite having quite a short lesson this week, managed to produce some lovely work on what you can and can't do in the town. I particularly liked Amelie's colour coordinated work which uses conjunctions and negatives, and the clever use of an adjective in the piece of work on the left makes it stand out from the rest. 

However, there were so many excellent ideas that here are some further examples!

Make sure that you've read the news about the OneThirdStories competition that was published earlier this week, and also the news about the eTwinning tree story writing competition. Señora Stevens has already received a lovely story from Ruby but would love to receive lots more. They will all be shared with the partner schools so even if your story is not the one chosen to be written in the travelling book, it will be read all over Europe!

Can you write the story of this tree?

Whitehouse Common is part of an eTwinning project with schools across Europe based on trees. One of the major activities of eTwinning Trees is creating a book of stories about siginficant trees in the neighbourhood of each participating school.  We have chosen to write a story about the oak tree that stands outside the Willows.

This tree is over 300 years and, in assembly last week, Señora Stevens encouraged the children to imagine what the tree might have witnessed. Anyone who would like the opportunity is invited to write a short story about the tree. It could be about the oak tree's life, or about an episode from it. It could have the tree as narrator or someone else could tell the story.  

 

 

Entries close at 3.30pm on Tuesday 9th February and can be handed in to KS2 Language Leaders or Señora Stevens. Please make sure that they are named! We will also need an illustrator for our story in the book so look out for another post soon. 

OneThirdStories competition - the results are in!

FullSizeRender 1 Before Christmas Whitehouse Common Primary School teamed up with young entrepreneurs from One Third Stories to get children engaged in foreign languages and creative writing. Señora Stevens and the Language Leaders asked pupils to come up with ideas to continue a story about a girl who had lost her words that would start in English and end in Spanish. KS2 pupils really enjoyed using their imaginations, producing all sorts of amazing ideas. Señora Stevens was very pleased to send off over 35 entries and the organisers tweeted us over Christmas to say that they enjoyed reading our entries.

 

The results have been eagerly awaited and tonight OneThirdStories tweeted the winner. Unfortunately, none of our entries was the overall winner, but we were awarded a prize for some top entries that just missed out. ¡Muy bien hecho! to everyone who took the time to enter. 

We're told that there is a new competition about to launch on the same website for parents and children. Have a look at www.onethirdstories.com/competition and watch this blog for more news!

Lo que aprendimos esta semana (Primavera 3)

What have we being doing in Spanish this week?

Year 3 have been working on their Spanish colours, answering the questions ¿De qué color es? (What colour is it?) Perhaps they'll listen to this song next week and see if they can predict the answer to the question before the video?

In Year 2, the animals you might find in the jungle have continued to be the focus. Next week will be our last week on this topic so look out for some pictures of the wonderful work that 2MW and 2DH have been doing. They might like to have a look at the Animals page of the BBC Primary Spanish site and listen to the song 'I see an animal.' Señora Stevens is a little bit biased but she thinks it's 'pegadiza' or very catchy!

Year 4 have using the iPads to find out about Spanish festivals. They worked in teams using the app Qrafter to read QR codes that lead them to articles about Spanish festivals. Their task was to find out the date of the festival and record it on their sheet. Everyone worked hard to collaborate, splitting the task equally between the group and sharing their answers. ¡Bien hecho!

Year 6 have continued to talk about their town and what you can do there, and Year 5 have begun to learn how to tell the time. They might like to have a sneak peek at the song we'll be learning this week to help us! But you've been warned '¡Es pegadiza!'

Next week, Year 3 are talking about their favourite colours, Year 6 will start planning their next assessment (which is more fun than it sounds!) and Year 5 will be singing and doing ballet to help their timetelling!

Lo que aprendimos esta semana (Primavera 2)

This week Year 4 have been putting together their work on days of the week, months of the year and numbers to learn how to say and write the full date in Spanish. They began the lesson with two activities to help them revise their previous learning.

Firstly they were given a Tarsia puzzle that involved matching English and Spanish words and phrases.

Then they used the 'Tesoro o Basura' boards to sort words into categories: 'los días de la semana son el tesoro; las otras palabras son la basura.'Jill trashandtreasure

Then they learned that you write the date using the same word order as you would in English:

"Today is Friday the 15th of January" becomes 'Hoy es viernes, el quince de enero.' 

Year 4 also noted that days of the week and months of the year do not have capital letters in Spanish, and that the date uses cardinal not ordinal numbers as we do in English, apart from on the first of the month which is 'el primero.'

 

In Year 2 we had a noisy time being zoo animals and answering the question ¿Quién soy?, and Year 6 rose to the challenge of finding information in short Spanish texts about places and buildings in the town. Year 5 finished their work on family and pets by writing about animals that they may (or may not!) own. Lots of imagination in evidence and very exciting to see learners using words, structures and knowledge from previous work to make their writing more interesting.

We received news via a tweet that OneThirdStories have enjoyed reading our entries into their Spanish story writing competition, and we await news of the results.

Next week there will be news of a new eTwinning project and the Language Leaders will be meeting on Thursday to talk about language learning at Whitehouse Common. If you have any ideas, please pass them on to your class Language Leader (KS2) or Señora Stevens.
